Book Dr. Robert and Bette Jo Nienhuis.

Bob and Bette Jo Nienhuis once lived in motels for six months straight as “road parents” for a music-evangelism team of college students, have moved 11 times in 30 years of marriage, and admit to being “coffee snobs” when asked about the five different types of coffee makers in their kitchen.

For nearly their entire married lives, Bob and Bette Jo have been committed to and involved in a mutual, shared ministry. It began in their second year of marriage as they traveled and ministered both to and with a group of college-aged musicians. Then, for over a dozen years while Bob was in pastoral ministry, Bette Jo joined him in pre-marital and marital counseling, leading couple’s Bible studies, and in nurturing and challenging believers in their faith. Now, while each enjoys an individual speaking ministry, Bob in pulpit ministry and Bible conferences and Bette Jo in women’s Bible studies and conferences, they draw special delight in a shared ministry which includes speaking at marriage and family conferences and in discipling couples.

Bette Jo currently serves as Director of Ministry to Women at Grace Community Church in Hudsonville, Michigan. Inspired with nursing as a child by a missionary nurse who visited her church, Bette Jo earned her nursing diploma at Bronson School of Nursing and her Bachelor of Science degree at Western Michigan University. She has worked in various nursing roles from staff nurse to nurse educator to endoscopy nurse in a career that spans 27 years. More recently, she earned a Master of Arts in Counseling degree from Grand Rapids Theological Seminary of Cornerstone University. Bette Jo enjoys a good walk, savors the taste of a Snicker’s candy bar and is finding great delight in being a grandmother.

Bob currently serves as the Executive Vice President and Chief Academic Officer of Cornerstone University in Grand Rapids, Michigan. Before entering academic administration, he served as a seminary professor and as senior pastor of a church. Bob earned his bachelor’s degree at Hope College, his Master of Divinity and Master of Theology degrees at Trinity Evangelical Divinity School, and his Doctor of Philosophy in Higher Education at Michigan State University. Passionate about his coffee, Bob also enjoys Three Musketeers candy bars and has given up hope of playing a really good game of golf.

Married for 35 years, Bob and Bette Jo have two married daughters and one grandchild.

“I’ve known Bob and Bette Jo for many years and have great confidence in their ministry. One of the most powerful aspects of Christian ministry is that the minister incarnates the principles of the gospel. Bob and Bette Jo not only speak the gospel but live it in their personal lives and their marriage and they are exemplary parents. Together, they bring a rich perspective in ministry to both youth and adults.”
